P0134 — O2 Sensor No Activity — Bank 1, Sensor 1
CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? Driveable but the engine is running open-loop without O2 feedback — fuel economy will suffer and catalyst damage can accumulate; fix within a week or two.
What P0134 means
The upstream O2 sensor on Bank 1 is producing no signal or a flat signal that never moves off ~0.45V. The ECU has given up trying to use it for fuel trim correction and is running estimated values.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Failed O2 sensor (heater circuit dead — most common, $30–100)
- O2 sensor heater circuit fuse blown
- Open circuit in the heater or signal wiring
- Exhaust leak right at or near the sensor bung
- Cracked or damaged sensor — especially on high mileage vehicles
Symptoms you might notice
- Check engine light on
- Noticeably worse fuel economy
- Possible rich running smell
- Long-term: catalytic converter may overheat and fail
What to check first
Check the heater circuit first: with the key on engine off, measure resistance across the heater wires at the O2 sensor connector. Most sensors read 3–15 ohms on the heater; an open reading (infinite ohms) means the heater element is burned out — replace the sensor. Also check the heater fuse before buying a sensor.
