P0223 — Throttle Position Sensor B Circuit High
CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? The ECU will likely enter limp mode — the throttle is untrustworthy; drive only to a shop and avoid highway speeds.
What P0223 means
The B channel of the dual throttle position sensor in a drive-by-wire throttle body is reading above its valid range (typically above 4.8V). The ECU cross-checks TPS A and TPS B and will flag a fault if they don't track inversely as expected.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Failed electronic throttle body (dual-sensor assembly, $80–400)
- Signal wire for TPS B shorted to voltage or 5V reference
- Open ground at the throttle position sensor
- Damaged wiring harness
- Rare: ECU throttle input circuit failure
Symptoms you might notice
- Reduced power / limp mode
- Erratic or unresponsive throttle
- Surging or stalling
- Check engine light
- On some vehicles, stability/traction control may also disable
What to check first
Compare TPS A and TPS B values simultaneously on a scan tool — sweep the throttle and confirm they move in opposite directions. If TPS B is high and fixed while TPS A moves normally, the B sensor element inside the throttle body has failed. Inspect the connector for corrosion or bent pins before replacing the throttle body.
