What P0442 means
The EVAP system is leaking a small amount of vapor — small enough that the gas cap is the usual suspect.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Loose / worn gas cap (most common)
- Tiny crack in an EVAP hose
- Leaking purge or vent valve seal
- Canister o-ring
Symptoms you might notice
- Check-engine light
- Sometimes a faint fuel smell
What to check first
Replace the gas cap first. Still there? Smoke-test — a small leak is hard to find without smoke.
