P0480 — Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit

CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? The ECM can't control the primary cooling fan — watch your temperature gauge closely; stop immediately if it climbs toward hot, as overheating causes serious engine damage.

What P0480 means

The ECM operates the electric radiator cooling fan through a relay or direct driver. P0480 means it sent a command to turn the fan on or off and the circuit didn't respond correctly. The engine can still cool at highway speed, but low-speed or stopped driving without a working fan risks overheating.

Most likely causes (in order)

  1. Cooling fan relay failed or stuck (most common — swap with an identical relay first)
  2. Fan motor burned out (check if fan spins freely by hand when cold)
  3. Wiring to relay or fan motor open or shorted
  4. ECM output driver for fan circuit failed
  5. Fuse for fan circuit blown (check underhood fuse box)

Symptoms you might notice

What to check first

With the engine at operating temp and AC on, the fan should run. Pull the fan relay and jumper the fan motor terminals directly to battery — if the fan spins, the motor is fine and the problem is upstream (relay, wiring, or ECM). If it doesn't spin, the motor is dead.
