P1259 — PATS Function Fault — VIP / Anti-Theft System Active

CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? Drive gently and get it looked at soon — it can worsen or fail inspection.

What P1259 means

This is a manufacturer-specific code — its meaning depends on the vehicle’s make (see below).

What P1259 means on specific makes

Heads up: P1259 is a manufacturer-specific code, so the same number means different things by make.

Ford / Lincoln CAUTION

General Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) malfunction code. The PCM and the anti-theft module aren't agreeing on the security handshake. Often a precursor to a no-start.

  1. Failed PATS/transceiver module ($150-400)
  2. Wiring/connector fault between PCM and anti-theft module ($50-200)
  3. Key transponder issue ($50-250 reprogram)

Check first: Scan the anti-theft module for sub-codes; verify the key reads at the transceiver ring.

Honda / Acura CAUTION

The PCM detected a fault in the electrical control of the VTEC variable valve timing/lift system. VTEC engagement is oil-pressure driven, so low/dirty oil or a stuck solenoid is the usual root — not always an electrical failure.

  1. Low or dirty engine oil (check FIRST, ~$40)
  2. Failed VTEC solenoid valve / pressure switch ($60-150)
  3. Clogged VTEC oil passages/screen
  4. Wiring/connector fault

Check first: Verify oil level and condition before anything — most P1259 clears with correct oil and a clean solenoid screen. Then test the VTEC solenoid and oil pressure switch.
