P1296 — Cooling System Malfunction (coolant temp / thermostat)
CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? Drive gently and get it looked at soon — it can worsen or fail inspection.
What P1296 means
This is a manufacturer-specific code — its meaning depends on the vehicle’s make (see below).
What P1296 means on specific makes
VW / Audi CAUTION
VW/Audi P1-code related to the cooling system not reaching/holding correct temperature — frequently a stuck-open thermostat or coolant-temp sensor on VAG engines.
- Stuck-open thermostat ($30-120)
- Coolant temperature sensor (G62, the green 4-pin) ($20-60)
- Low coolant / air pocket
- Wiring to the temp sensor
Check first: Verify warm-up temp with live data vs. gauge. The G62 coolant sensor and thermostat are cheap, common VAG fixes (often with P0128).
