P1340 — Camshaft/Crankshaft Position Sensor Signals Out of Sequence

CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? Drive gently and get it looked at soon — it can worsen or fail inspection.

What P1340 means

This is a manufacturer-specific code — its meaning depends on the vehicle’s make (see below).

What P1340 means on specific makes

VW / Audi CAUTION

VW/Audi P1-code: the cam and crank signals are not correlating in sequence. Like P0341, on VAG this points toward timing-chain/belt or cam-sensor faults rather than a single sensor.

  1. Timing chain stretch / tensioner (chain engines) ($1,000-2,500)
  2. Cam or crank position sensor ($50-150)
  3. Skipped timing belt tooth (belt engines)
  4. Reluctor/trigger wheel

Check first: Verify cam-crank correlation and chain/belt condition. On EA888 chain engines suspect the tensioner.
