Mazda CAUTION
Mazda uses a stepper-motor (motorized) EGR valve; this code flags coil #1 of that motor as open or shorted. The EGR can't position correctly, causing emissions and driveability faults. P1497 is coil #2.
- Failed motorized EGR valve ($120-350)
- EGR connector/wiring fault
- Carbon-clogged EGR sticking the motor
Check first: Measure the EGR motor coil resistances and check the connector; clean or replace the EGR valve. P1496/P1497 often set together when the valve fails.
