What P1686 means on specific makes
Dodge / Jeep / Ram / Chrysler STOP
The PCM isn't getting any message from the SKIM immobilizer module over the bus — a communication failure rather than a bad key. Often a wiring/bus or failed SKIM/WIN module. Causes no-start.
- CCD/PCI bus wiring fault between PCM and SKIM ($50-200)
- Failed SKIM/WIN module ($150-400)
- Connector/power-ground fault at SKIM ($0-100)
Check first: Check for bus communication between the PCM and SKIM; verify power/ground to the SKIM module.
