P0202 — Injector Circuit Malfunction — Cylinder 2
STOPIs it safe to drive? Same risk as any injector circuit fault — a dead cylinder destroys the catalytic converter quickly; don't drive until diagnosed.
What P0202 means
The ECU detected an electrical fault (open, short to ground, or short to voltage) in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 2. The cylinder may be firing with no fuel or with incorrect fuel delivery.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Failed fuel injector (open or shorted internally)
- Loose or corroded connector at cylinder 2 injector
- Open or shorted wiring in the injector harness
- Wiring damage where harness routes near the exhaust manifold
- Damaged PCM injector driver (rare)
Symptoms you might notice
- Cylinder 2 misfire (usually P0302 companion code)
- Rough idle and vibration
- Power loss
- Fuel smell — injector stuck open vs. no fuel from open circuit will affect smell differently
What to check first
Swap the cylinder 2 injector connector with an adjacent cylinder — if the misfire follows the connector (now showing P0303 instead of P0302), the fault is in the wiring, not the injector. If the misfire stays on cylinder 2, the injector is bad. This swap test costs nothing and takes two minutes.
