P0641 — Sensor Reference Voltage 'A' Circuit Open / Out of Range (5V reference)

CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? Usually driveable, but get it diagnosed soon; it can worsen, hurt fuel economy, or fail emissions if ignored.

What P0641 means

The PCM's 5-volt reference supply that feeds multiple sensors (TPS, MAP, etc.) is out of tolerance or shorted/open. Can knock out several sensors at once and trigger limp mode.

Most likely causes (in order)

  1. Shorted sensor pulling down the 5V reference (disconnect sensors to isolate) ($0-50)
  2. Chafed/shorted wiring harness
  3. Failed PCM reference circuit ($300-1,000)
  4. Bad sensor ground

Symptoms you might notice

What to check first

Measure the 5V reference at affected sensors; unplug sensors one at a time to find the short. Often a wiring/sensor short, not the PCM.
