What P0700 means
P0700 itself isn't a specific fault — it's the transmission controller telling the engine computer to turn on the light because the TCM logged a separate trouble code. The real story is in those transmission-specific codes.
Most likely causes (in order)
- A specific transmission DTC is stored (read it — P0715, P0730, P0740, etc.)
- Low or burnt transmission fluid
- Solenoid or sensor fault inside the trans
- Wiring to the transmission

What to check first
Read the TRANSMISSION codes (a tool that does all-system, not just engine) — P0700 alone tells you nothing. Check fluid level and condition first; many trans faults start there.
