P0705 — Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction
CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? The transmission doesn't know what gear the shifter is in. Reverse lights and starter-inhibit may stop working — shift gently and get it checked.
What P0705 means
The transmission range sensor (also called the neutral-safety switch or PRNDL sensor) tells the TCM what position the shifter is in. With a bad signal the trans can be confused about range selection, and the reverse lights and crank-inhibit may not function. Exact symptoms vary by make.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Dirty or misadjusted TRS/neutral-safety switch (check adjustment first)
- Corroded or damaged wiring/connector to the switch
- Failed transmission range sensor
- Internal transmission mechanical issue (rare)
Symptoms you might notice
- Check-engine light
- No reverse lights
- Engine won't crank in Park
- Wrong gear indicated on dash
What to check first
Check the TRS connector and wiring first; on many transmissions the sensor needs adjustment after service. Check fluid level before pulling anything apart.
