P0441 — EVAP Emission Control System — Incorrect Purge Flow
SAFEIs it safe to drive? Evaporative emissions fault only — you can drive normally, but find the cause before your inspection; gas fumes escaping is the concern, not engine damage.
What P0441 means
The EVAP purge valve opens during certain drive conditions to pull fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the intake manifold to be burned. The ECM verified the purge valve opened but didn't see the expected pressure or O2 sensor response confirming actual vapor flow.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Purge solenoid valve stuck closed or clogged
- Vacuum line from purge valve to intake cracked or disconnected
- Charcoal canister saturated and not flowing (rare, but happens on very old vehicles)
- Small EVAP leak in the purge circuit confusing the flow test
- ECM not commanding purge at the right time (software or sensor issue)
Symptoms you might notice
- fuel smell near engine bay
- CEL on
- failed emissions monitor
What to check first
With the engine at operating temp and cruising above 55 mph, use a scanner to command the purge valve open in active test mode — the fuel trims should shift lean as vapors enter. If trims don't move, the valve isn't flowing; disconnect the hose at the intake and check for vacuum pull when commanded open.
