P0742 — Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On
STOPIs it safe to drive? The TCC is stuck engaged — the engine and transmission are mechanically locked together. This will stall the car at stops. Do not continue driving.
What P0742 means
The TCC solenoid or hydraulic circuit is stuck in the locked position. When you come to a stop, the engine can stall because it can't slip. This is drivability-breaking and risks stalling in traffic.
Most likely causes (in order)
- TCC solenoid stuck closed (failed mechanically or electrical short)
- Valve body TCC circuit stuck
- Wiring short holding the solenoid on
- Debris in TCC hydraulic circuit
Symptoms you might notice
- Engine stalls at stops
- Very rough deceleration
- Hard braking to prevent stall
What to check first
Verify by commanding TCC off with a scanner — if RPM and speed still track 1:1 at low speed, it's stuck on. Check solenoid resistance and look for a short to power in the wiring.
