P0741 — Torque Converter Clutch Performance / Stuck Off
CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? The torque converter clutch isn't locking up when commanded. Economy suffers; the trans runs hotter than designed at highway speed.
What P0741 means
The PCM commanded TCC lockup but the input-vs-output speed difference stayed too high — the clutch didn't engage. This is the mechanical/performance version of TCC failure. Check fluid and solenoid before assuming internal damage.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Worn internal TCC friction lining
- Faulty or stuck TCC solenoid
- Low hydraulic pressure (low fluid, worn pump)
- Low or degraded transmission fluid
- Valve body issue
Symptoms you might notice
- High RPM at cruise
- Reduced fuel economy
- Trans running hot
What to check first
Compare input vs. output speed at highway cruise with a scanner — excessive slip (>50 RPM steady) while TCC is commanded on points to the TCC friction material or hydraulic pressure. Change the fluid first.
