P0894 — Transmission Component Slipping
CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? The transmission is measurably slipping — input and output speeds don't agree. Address this promptly; continued slipping burns clutch material and accelerates damage.
What P0894 means
A broad slip code: the TCM detected that input shaft speed is higher than it should be for the output shaft speed, indicating clutch, band, or TCC slip. This code often accompanies more specific gear-ratio or TCC codes — read them all. Fluid is the first move.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Low or burnt transmission fluid (top priority — check immediately)
- Worn clutch packs or bands
- Worn or slipping TCC
- Low hydraulic line pressure (worn pump, clogged filter)
- Shift solenoid issue
Symptoms you might notice
- RPM flares during shifts
- Sluggish acceleration
- Harsh engagement
- Trans running hot
What to check first
Check fluid level and color now — dark, burnt fluid with a metallic smell is a sign of serious wear. Then pull all stored transmission codes; P0894 rarely travels alone.
