P1635 — 5-Volt Reference 1 Circuit Malfunction

CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? Drive gently and get it looked at soon — it can worsen or fail inspection.

What P1635 means

This is a manufacturer-specific code — its meaning depends on the vehicle’s make (see below).

What P1635 means on specific makes

Chevy / GMC / Cadillac / Buick CAUTION

The PCM's 5-volt sensor reference circuit (which powers multiple sensors like TPS, MAP, etc.) is out of range. Because many sensors share this 5V feed, a fault here can throw several seemingly-unrelated sensor codes at once.

  1. Shorted sensor dragging the 5V reference down ($varies)
  2. Wiring short-to-ground or short-to-power ($20-150)
  3. Chafed harness ($20-150)
  4. PCM fault (rare) ($varies)

Check first: Measure the 5V reference; if low, unplug sensors one at a time to find the one shorting the circuit.
