P0711 — Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? The trans fluid temperature sensor is reading implausibly. Low risk of immediate breakdown but the TCM may alter shift logic to protect itself.
What P0711 means
The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor signal is out of range or not changing as expected. The TCM uses this to adjust shift quality; a bad reading may cause delayed shifts or the trans staying in a protective mode. Check fluid condition — the sensor and fluid go together.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Burnt or degraded transmission fluid (change fluid and recheck first)
- Failed TFT sensor
- Wiring / connector fault
- Stuck TFT sensor (reads same value warm and cold)
Symptoms you might notice
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Limp mode in some vehicles
- Check-engine light
What to check first
Drop the pan and check fluid condition — dark, burnt fluid causes erratic sensor readings. If fluid is fine, check the sensor's resistance cold vs. warm with a multimeter.
