P0712 — Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Low Input
CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? The trans temperature sensor reads implausibly cold. The TCM may not optimize shift strategy correctly.
What P0712 means
A low voltage signal from the TFT sensor usually means a short to ground in the sensor or wiring, or a sensor that has failed shorted. The computer sees an unrealistically cold transmission temperature.
Most likely causes (in order)
- Short to ground in the TFT sensor wiring
- Failed TFT sensor (shorted internally)
- Burnt or contaminated fluid fouling the sensor
- Connector corrosion
Symptoms you might notice
- Check-engine light
- Possible harsh shifts
- Trans may stay in cold-start strategy
What to check first
Unplug the TFT sensor connector: if voltage rises to reference (~5V), the sensor or wiring is shorted. Check the connector for corrosion and water intrusion.
