P0712 — Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Low Input

CAUTIONIs it safe to drive? The trans temperature sensor reads implausibly cold. The TCM may not optimize shift strategy correctly.

What P0712 means

A low voltage signal from the TFT sensor usually means a short to ground in the sensor or wiring, or a sensor that has failed shorted. The computer sees an unrealistically cold transmission temperature.

Most likely causes (in order)

  1. Short to ground in the TFT sensor wiring
  2. Failed TFT sensor (shorted internally)
  3. Burnt or contaminated fluid fouling the sensor
  4. Connector corrosion

Symptoms you might notice

What to check first

Unplug the TFT sensor connector: if voltage rises to reference (~5V), the sensor or wiring is shorted. Check the connector for corrosion and water intrusion.
